The X-Drive

The heart of gamut2 is hidden below the deck. This is the innovative X-drive (indicated by 2 red lines). For the first time, a rowing ergometer duplicates the geometry of a rowing shell. As a result, the X-drive produces the best rowing feel of any flywheel ergometer on the market.

  1. At the catch, the oar in a shell is pushing sideways, pinching the boat. The force available to push the boat forward (yellow arrow) is only about 1/2 of the total force applied to the oar (grey arrow). The same sideways pinch is duplicated in the gamut2, producing a quick and firm catch. The catch is much closer to true rowing than the original Gamut erg from 40 years ago.

  2. In the middle of the stroke, the oar pulls parallel to the boat. All of the force is used to push the boat forward (yellow arrow and grey arrow are idential in size). The same is true with the gamut2.

  3. At the end of the stroke, the oar again begins to pinch the boat. About 2/3 of the force is available to push the boat forward. The same is true with the gamut2.
